For almost two weeks this July, Anthology Film Archives turns the programming reins over to agnès b.
Passionate advocate of international avant-garde and art cinema, agnès b. selected a series showcasing some of the films she considers her most formative and beloved. Bringing together masterpieces – some widely acknowledged and others relatively neglected – from France, the UK, Italy, Czechoslovakia, and Japan, her selection adds up to a dreamy summer series, a chance to beat the heat with some of the pinnacles of 1950s-70s cinema.
“...born and raised in Versailles, I had a classical and humanistic upbringing. I grew up starving to know more from the people who knew how to talk about life, sentiments, impulses, those who could talk in a freer or more rebellious way – contemporary literature and cinema, coming from other cultures as well, started to open up doors for me. I saw the movies that I selected for this Anthology program in my 20s and 30s; from them, I learnt how to look at things from other points of view, other angles that showed passions, wounds, and how to resist in all kinds of ways and they left an imprint on me.” –agnès b.
