We invited Rafael Gray to present his work right in a middle of a production process, it is as a freezed frame of a sequence that is taking place. More than ever "work in progress" presented under the title of "Circus", produced this summer, warmly colored, in search of exoticisms… his world is there… the world map split up by portraits of friends, encounters, characters of almost everywhere in the world, terrorists there next to the FBI "most wanted" and the "missing persons" Kurds . All this give us a glimpse of his future creations … Rafael Gray made himself known in the early 1980s through his work in the streets of Paris and New York (graffiti and posters). From his urban experiences, he retains a spontaneous graphic gesture and a continual search for new spaces for his painting. Opposed to the fixed nature of paintings, in 1988 he initiated a world wide voyage of a “work in progress" piece that traveled all over the globe ( rafaelgray.net ). He explored this beginning of motion in parallel using poetry between painting and cinema. Accumulating a large series of images, he took into account both the canvas and the screen. The images of the world seen during his travels are juxtaposed with images he found (press photos, posters) and are recycled and re-appropriated by the act of painting. Voluntarily chaotic, this process, which links the paintings as so many disorganized photogrammes, reveals itself in the films which gather sequences and diversity in the same progression. 6 rue du Jour, from september 4th to 18th.
