Synopsis: in a small provincial town, two friends, Karen and Martha, run a private school for young girls with the help of Lily, an eccentric former actress and Martha’s aunt. Karen, who is engaged to Doctor Joe Cardin, finds it difficult to get involved and leaves the running of the school to Martha. When Mary, an insolent and deceitful student, is punished, she spreads the rumour that the two teachers are involved in an “unnatural” relationship. She starts off by telling the story to her grandmother…
