je m'appelle hmmm...

First feature film directed by Agnès Troublé (aka agnès b.), My Name Is Hmmm… is a fiction starring Douglas Gordon, Lou-Lélia Demerliac, Sylvie Testud, Jacques Bonnaffé, Marie-Christine Barrault and Jean-Pierre Kalfon.
Story:
A fiction, the escape of an 11 years old girl, the eldest of 3 children. An absent mother, an abusive father, a grandmother who is too innocent to imagine what is happening. A field trip, the girl disappears... She has found refuge on a truck; a wonderful and tragical road movie with a Scottish teamster. An initiatory journey. A chance meeting, new encounters "where love just happens?"
Director's statement:
"I wrote Je m’appelle Hmmm… in one go, some ten years back, on an impulse, at the same time as I was carrying on with fashion design. It was Christian Bourgois who introduced me to the cinema. Later, I accidentally got hold of an old Nikon and I replaced drawing by photography. I like to catch and observe what is obvious to me, and also what others show, their gestures, habits and attitudes through interesting angles. I like rear, three-quarter and side shots.
Since the early 2000s, I have had a video camera and I shoot two- to three-minute films in which I feature my clothes in short fictions… on a very tight schedule, shooting by day, editing at night, in the four or five days before the collection is publicly disclosed.
To get back to my script, I read 10 years ago, in Le Monde, an article about an accused man who killed himself in the judge’s office, using a letter-opener. I took the liberty of inventing the story that could have led him to this desperate gesture: on the occasion of a school trip to the seaside, a 12 years old or so girl, abused by her father on a regular basis, escapes.
This is not a film about incest. It’s a story about a runaway and its consequences.
At the very beginning of the film, the act of incest is soberly, elliptically and briefly shown. The little girl escapes during a trip to the seaside and hides in a truck. Then [... ] +

At the very beginning of the film, the act of incest is soberly, elliptically and briefly shown. The little girl escapes during a trip to the seaside and hides in a truck. Then an initiation trip begins during which the young girl discovers how beautiful life, friendship and adventure can be. This is a road movie shot in France, around Bordeaux. Although she has little experience of the world, the heroine is adventurous, she wants to see and discover everything. She has found a precious friend.
The truck driver who picks her up, somewhat adrift himself – a no future character – who begins to feel a true and happy love for the little girl. He knows she will never betray her father whom she loves nonetheless. She never says a thing, believing that all dads are “like that.”
I wanted to make a film against prejudice and show that one should be careful not to make hasty judgments. You risk picking the wrong target.
I wanted to show this journey as an “out-of-time” period… and also show the intensity of their mutual love, so silent, so pure, and evident.
Of course this is not my own personal story, but I know what I’m talking about."
