n°34 - Michel Foucault

Michel Foucault, a daring free-thinking philosopher
and historian, analyst of all the forms of power, has
left an oeuvre which remains a formidable ‘toolbox’,
not only for the understanding of our society but
also for how to shake it up. Many are those who
continue to draw on his illuminating ideas.
He is the author, among others, of Madness and
Civilization (1961), The Order of Things: an
archaeology of the human sciences (1966),
Discipline and Punish: the birth of the prison (1975)
and The History of Sexuality in 3 volumes (1976
-1984). He died in 1984, but remains an essential
point of reference in current philosophical thought.
This issue of point d’ironie has been created to
mark the 20th anniversary of his death, in
association with the Festival d’automne à Paris,
the Autumn Festival in Paris. Daniel Defert and
Philippe Artières have been extremely kind in
making a selection of unpublished photographs
available so that agnès could produce the layout
and combine them with some significant extracts
from his writings or conversations that underscore
the burning topicality of his thought.
